In consequence of having received a letter from Mr James Reid, who is in the employ of Robt. Hazlett Kyle dated Richmond. Virginia I went to the Elliott tavern and introduced myself to Mr David Kyle formerly of Barclay, Tyrone.

He is now a very opulent Merchant and resides in Lyndeburg? Virginia and owns several stores in this state.

I told him that I understood through Mr j Reid that he might require a young man, and that if my present engagement with Mr Gowan could be dispensed with, I would prefer going on to the South in his employment. He immediately agreed to take me along with him without any other recommendations there, what a short acquaintance of an hours conversation afforded.

This day I received a letter from James Buchanan Esq. British Consul N York regretting his absence when I called there and offering to do anything he could for me by writing or otherwise. I had time only to sent compliments to him by Mr D Kyle who was going to New York next morning

I had also the offer of 2 or 3 situations from West Country merchants (through two Irish friends) but I was well content with the one I had procured, and prepared to start next morning in great spirits to Virginia.1
