Union County
J.D.D. Gregory one of the firm of Gregory and Rowell on my oath depose and
say that I am one of said firm and that we have made numerous efforts to
ascertain the whereabouts of one James Hammil Turner = and that those efforts
made are as follows We have had numerous conversations with one Isaac K.
White who informed us that he brought said James Hammil Turner to this state
in A.D. 1857 - that in A.D. 1860 said James Hammil Turner left his home and
the last he knew of him he was at Chariton Lucus County in this State - We
then published a notice in a weekly newspaper published in said Town of
Chariton And also we published a notice in the weekly newspaper published in
the town of Afton in Union County Iowa both of said papers are of general
circulation that in said notices we requested information in regard to said
James Hammil Turner these publications was had in the month of October A.D.
1870 that up to this date we have had no response We heard of a J.H. Turner
in Monroe County in State and wrote to him his friends reply that his name was
James Harvey Turner and that he was dead but parents lived there and that he
was not the man we wanted. We also learned of a J.H.Turner in Carroll County
in the State of Missouri and we wrote to him and in his reply he says his name
is Joseph Humphrey Turner.
We also had a conversation with one S.S. Woodard who resides at Chariton and
resided there in 1860 and knew James Hammil Turner But he says he has no
Knowledge of him at this time nor since 1861 That he (Woodard) recruited two
Companies for the United States Army in that County in 1862 but that said
Turner was not among them That we exhausted all the means in our power to
ascertain whether said James Hammil Turner be living or dead. The above
mentioned firm of Gregory & Rowell are attorneys and counsellors at Law.
