The late James Wright, Esq., of Passage
BIOGRAPHY THE LATE JAMES WRIGHT, ESQ., OF PASSAGE. ...To many of the Ministers and friends of Methodism throughout Ireland, James Wright was known, and was prized and beloved because of his long and faithful adherence to the cause of his early choice - that system which, when a very young man, proved a blessing to his soul, and of which for fifty-three years he was an unswerving, loyal and faithful member. The hand of Providence (which he loved gratefully to acknowledge in after years) led him, when almost a lad, to emigrate from his native place, Dunmanway, to Canada, up to which period he was without decision in religious matters, and lived thoughtlessly as his companions. ...While in Canada he had the happiness of being the first to greet the first Wesleyan Missionary, the Rev. Robert Strong, of the Irish Conference, sent out by the Parent Society. This must have been about the year 1813; and to it he often referred with gratitude to the Great Head of the Church, particularly when hearing or reading of the wonderful growth of the Wesleyan cause in Canada, from that day to this. Returning home to his native place, God made him the instrument of the conversion of three of his sisters, all of whom died happy in the Lord. ...Mr. Wright went to reside in the town of Passage about the year 1839, and for nearly twenty-five years was the main pillar of the small society there....
