Some of these last mentioned Unions contain Urban Sanitary Districts from which applications have proceeded for loans for sewerage or water supply; and in such Unions the influ¬ ence of example may soon be felt through the adjoining Districts.
In Urban Sanitary Districts orders fixing the area of charge are inapplicable, inasmuch as in such districts all sanitary expen¬ ses are by law made chargeable on the common fund of the district.

In^both Urban and Rural Districts, part of the operations for sewerage and water sujDply are carried out at the expense of the current rates when the cost is comparatively small; but in cases where the cost of special works for such purposes are con¬ siderable and of permanent utility, Loans under the 43rd section from the Board of Works are contracted by the Sanitary Author¬ ity on the recommendation of the Local Government Board.
In our Annual Report, dated 31st March, 1876, was a Tabular statement, showing a
" List of Loans recommended to the Board of Works" in the course of the previous year, sixteen in number and amounting in the whole to £37,584; and in the following report a similar list is given consisting of fifteen cases, amounting in the whole to £41,085.
On the present occasion we give below a similar table containing a list of twenty-one loans, amounting in the whole to £62,056, recommended since 31st March, 1877.
