Education Table xxs.)

Prom the preceding Table it will be seen that of the total population of the County, in 1881, 96-7 per cent, were Roman Catholics, 2"9 per cent.
Protestant Episcopalians, 0"3 per cent.
Presbyterians, and O'l per cent.
Methodists.
During the decade there was a decrease in the number of Roman Catholics of 2*9 per cent.,
and of Protestant Episcopalians, 8-1; there was an increase of 34 in the number of Presbyterians, and* of 5 in the number of Methodists.
The following statement shows the Educational Status of the Inhabitants of the County of Galway in 1871 and 1881, in so far as relates to the degrees of elementary education relative to which inquiry was made on the Census Porms.

Prom the above it will be seen that whereas, according to the Returns of 1871, only 28"1 per cent, of the inhabitants could "read and write," in 1881, 36"9 per cent, could do so; that the per-centage of the population who could "read only" in 1871 was 10"0, and in 1881, 10"9 ; and that the per-centage of the "illiterate" fell from 61-9 in 1871 to 52-2 in 1881.
The following statement shows the Population five years old and upwards, also the number and proportion per cent, thereof who were Illiterate:—

Decrease in the Population.

From the foregoing statement it will be seen that, in 1871, 5 6 "4 per cent, of the inhabitants, aged five years and upwards, were Illiterate (51*7 per cent, of the males, and 60-9 of the females), and that, in 1881, the per-centage was but 45-8 (42*7 of the males and 48-9 of the females).
Taking Religious Professions and Education in combination, it appears that in 1881, excluding children under five years of age, 47-2 per cent, of Roman Catholics, 6-6 per cent, of Protestant Episcopalians, 3*1 per cent, of Presbyterians, 3-0 per cent, of Methodists, and 1-3 percent, of "All other Denominations" were Illiterate.

The number of children attending school in the County of Galway, according to the Census of 1871 (week ending 17th June), was 23,739, or 26-8 per cent, of persons aged 5 years and under 20; in 1881 the number returned (for week ending 14th May), was 2S,519, or 31-5 per cent, of the persons aged 5 and under 20.
In 1871 the number of persons in the County of Galway returned as Sick, on the night of the Census, was 1,819, or 1 in every 137 of the population ; in 1881 the number so returned was 1,567, or 1 in every 154 of the population ; of the latter number 884 were at their own homes, and 683 were in hospital.
The number of persons returned in 1871 as receiving relief under the Poor Law System was 2,404, or 1 in every 103 of the population, of this number 2,016 were inmates of Workhouses, and 388 were in receipt of outdoor relief; in 1881 the number returned was 4,055, or 1 in every 60 of the population, 2,012 of these being in the Workhouses, and 2,043 on outdoor relief.

For the purposes of Registration of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, the Poor Law Union forms a "Superintendent Registrar's District," each Union or Superintendent Registrar's District is divided into Dispensary Districts for the Medical Relief of the poor under the Medical Charities Act; which Districts, save in a few instances, are identical with the Registrars' Districts.
Each Dispensary District is composed of a certain number of Poor Law Electoral Divisions.
According to the Returns of the Registrar-General the number of Marriages registered in the County of Galway, during the ten years ending 31st March, 1881, was 8,648, equal to an average annual rate of 3-5 per 1,000 of the population.
The number registered in the whole of Ireland during the same period, affords an average annual rate of 4-7 per 1,000.
The number of Births registered in the County during the ten years was 04,461, affording an average annual rate of 26-3 per 1,000 of the population, the average yearly rate for the whole of Ireland during the same neriod being 26-3 per 1,000.

L The deaths registered during the decennium amounted to 37,336, being equal to an average annual rate of 15-2 per 1,000; the corresponding rate for the whole of Ireland was 18-3 per 1,000.
Tke^ number of Emigrants from the County during the ten years ending 31st March 1881, amounted to 23,605 (11,891 males and 11,774 females); the number for the previous decade was 38,758, and for that endin» with March, 1861, 50,838, making a total of 113,261 for the thirty years.

& The number of Births registered during the ten years ending 31st March, 1881, being 04,461, and the number of Deaths 37,336, a natural increase of 27,125 would appear to have taken place in the Population; but the Emigrants, during the same period, having amounted to 23,665, the net result shown is an increase of 3,460, whereas, according to the Census Returns, a decrease of 7,715 is shown, a disparity to be accounted for mainly by defective registration of Deaths in the earlier years, and to some extent by incomplete returns of Emigrants, together with the fact that no record of Migration from one part of Ireland to another is obtainable.
