OUR GENERAL SUPERINTENTENTS

...Isaac W. Joyce, D.D., LL.D., traces
his ancestry back to Ireland and the city
of Dublin. He was born, however, in
Hamilton county, Ohio, October 11,
1836. During his childhood his father
removed to Indiana, where for many
years he attended to farming pursuits.
At 16 he was converted and united
with the Church. Succeeding years were
devoted to college study and to teaching.
In 1859 he joined the Northwest Indiana
Conference and was ordained deacon by
Bishop Simpson in 1861, and elder by
Bishop Morris in 1863.
He served several of the leading
charges in the Conference, and was
presiding elder of the East Lafayette
District for four years. From Indiana
Asbury (now DePauw) University he
received the degree of A.M., and from
Dickinson College that of D.D., in 1876.
He was delegated to the general Conference
of 1880, and served as Secretary of
the Committee on Itineracy. He was
transferred to the Cincinnati Conference
in September, 1880, and served as pastor
of St. Paul's, Cincinnati; Trinity Church,
Cincinnati; and by unanimous request
was reappointed to St. Paul's for a
second term in 1886. By appointment of
the Bishops he represented the Methodist
Episcopal Church at the General Conference
of the Methodist Church of
Canada, in September, 1886. He was
chosen Bishop in 1888, and now resides
at Chattanooga, Tenn. [Tennessee?]
