Down BT34 3SU THE KANES THE STORY SO FAR Of the eight children of Patrick Kane and Mary Early four remain living. Patrick is the only one of these eight children still in Ireland. As with many families the need to disperse to other countries, mainly England, was a necessary part of the struggle to seek out employment and develop as individuals and families which would have been difficult if not impossible in Ireland, or more specifically Northern Ireland. Politics, poverty and religion necessitated that the children of Patrick and Mary sought independent and separate ways. It was difficult to remain as a tight knit family unit in the 1940s, Charlie, the eldest, went to study for the priesthood but resolved that the life of a cleric was not to his calling. He married Ita Haden and settled in Enniskillen. Brendan joined up in 38 and after surviving a shrapnel blast at Dunkirk, settled as a teacher in Yorkshire. Moya too settled in Yorkshire. Their partners were the finest Yorkshire could offer. Janie and Paddy both left Ireland and while Paddy experienced the horrors of night time air-raids in the industrial North-East of England his sister returned from a teaching post in the West Country to her parents home in Belfast. Retuning to England she married a small, dark and handsome Ulsterman and eventually settled in Essex. While Paddy returned to the homestead with his beautiful Annie from Carlow, John forsook all notions to becoming a second John McCormac to settle down with the lovely Maureen, a cockney girl from good Irish stock. Eithne married a not so small handsome and intelligent man from the West and made her life in the garden of England, Kent. Jim, the baby of eight, went West as a young man to seek his fortune in the Big Apple. Patrick Kane and Mary Early both came from Catholic stock and lived long lives. While Patrick died on Easter Monday 1959 (1st April) his wife followed the following year on the same day, although the date was the 20th. Whether each had a happy as well as a long life is a matter for conjecture. Patrick had run away from home at about the age of fourteen. His mother Janie (formerly McEldarry) died in 1888 at the age of 40 and his father Charles remarried one Bridget Kane. Young Patrick's relationship with his stepmother was not a happy one. By the time of his mothers death his only brother Felix had died at the age of eleven (24th March 1879) and his only sister Mary lived but a mere 17 months. According to the records Charles and Bridget had no children and young Patrick left Pomeroy. Both he and his father were carpenters. Charles Cain was born in 1841 and spent his life in Pomeroy. Mary Early (born 26.12.1878) was the eldest of three. Her brothers James and Joe were different in many ways. James was meticulous, conscientious individual who ran excursions to different parts of the country and keep very detailed records of his work. The running of these excursions was very much a seasonal occupation which he undertook as work in factories in Belfast was very hard to obtain, if you were a Catholic! However while there was never ending applications the replies always seemed to be the same. No opening at present. Shortly after (1922) he did obtain a position Gallagher's tobacco factory, but when the troubles began (1922) his sister ensured he left the 'city' and returned to Cookstown where he contacted diptheria and died. He was 31 years old. Joe married very happily. He was very close to his wife Anne (Maguire) and his daughter Maureen who was in turn a good friend to her cousin Janie. On the death of his wife, Maureen took him in to live. His death on Saturday 1st October 1958 is recalled. My mother, Janie sat bolt upright in bed and shouted the name 'Joe'. As this is my father's name he was agitated and wanted to know what was the cause of her sudden concern. My mother explained that she had dreamt of her uncle's death. At eleven o'clock that morning a telegram arrived to confirm her earlier fear. The three children, Mary, Jim and Joe were born in Cookstown, Mary on 26 February 1878, Jim on 26 March 1879 in Oldtown. (There is some discrepancy here as Jim who died in 1922 was, according to sources certainly no more than 30 when he died). Joe was born in Cookstown Workhouse on 12 June 1881. Their parents were John Early and Jane Early (formerly Duncan) who were born in 1858 and 1864 respectively. He was a shoe maker and she a linen weaver, (Another anomoly is while John died in 1918 he does not appear on the census of 1901). In 1918 the 'big flu' claimed the lives of many. Both John and Joe died in January and John's mother died on July 10th at the age of 72, (according to documentation). Theresa was married on 22 November 1856 to Patrick Starrs Early. Such was the hardship of living in Tullyard that Patrick left home (circa 1859) to travel and seek work in America. Even in America life was not easy and with Civil War looming many sought a livlihood through enlistment. Patrick Starrs Early obtained a commision as a lieutenant, was wounded in action, captured and suffered great hardships. He wrote to his wife and anticipated her accompanying him in due course. This did not materialise and while he did survive the civil war he died sometime afterwards. It is difficult to trace further back but records do show that one James Early married Mary Timony from Killyneal, Dungannon (circa 1822). The information obtained herein is complied from sources which may themselves be inaccurate, particularly the census for 1901 and 1911. The picture here is as complete a picture as can be pieced together at present and I am sure further investigation would reveal much more of interest. Down Deare Mr Graham Further to my letter of March 8th please find detailed below results researched as mentioned in my letter of 22 February 1993. We began by researching the civil registers of Cookstown for the death of Teresa Early and her husband Patrick Early and through council records we discovered the marriage of the above couple. Unfortunately parental names were not included. Details are listed below. SOURCE; CIVIL REGISTRATION PARISH; DESERTCREAT 10 June 1918- Theresa Early/Smart, McElhattons Court, Cookstown, died 72 years old. Witness was Mary Kane SOURCE; CATHOLIC PARISH REGISTER, DESERCREAT 22 November 1856- Marriage of Patrick Early- Theresa Smart. Witnesses were Susan Smart and Bridget Smart. With regard to the children of the marriage of Patrick Early and Teresa Smart we have clarified the issue of a 'Tom Duncan' whom you had previously presumed to have been an off-spring of Teresa Smarts second marriage. The details researched are listed below; SOURCE; CIVIL REGISTRATION PARISH; DESERTCREAT 1 May 1859- James of Patrick Early and Teresa Smart. 1858- John of Patrick Early and Teresa Smart. SOURCE; CHURCH RECORDS PARISH; DESERTCREAT Circa 1874-1876 - Marriage of John Early to Jane Duncan. Hence from the above results one can see the relationship of Tom Duncan, brother of Jane Duncan. This would explain the letter Jane wrote to the Railroad Authorities in 1897 for an explanation regarding Toms death. To the marriage of John Early and Jane Duncan there were three children as listed overleaf. 2 SOURCE: CIVIL REGISTRATION PARISH: DERRYLORAN 26 February 1878 - Mary Early of John Early and Jane Duncan, Old Town, Cookstown. 26 March 1879 - James of John Early and Jane Duncan, Old Town, Cookstown. 12 June 1881 - Joseph of John Early and Jane Duncan, Cookstown Workhouse In 1918 both parents of the above listed children died of similar diseases as listed. SOURCE; CIVIL REGISTRATION PARISH; DERRYLORAN 3 January 1918 - John Early aged 60 years. Witness was James Early, Old Town, Cookstown. 6 January Jane Early nee Duncan, aged 54 years. Witness was unreadable, Old Town, Cookstown. To continue our report we must now introduce the 'Kane' family to our research, as Patrick Kane and Mary Early were married having eight children; one of whom was your mother. Patrick Kane was a son of Charles Kane and Janice McElderry as was Felix and Mary, the results are listed below. SOURCE; CIVIL REGISTRATION PARISH; POMEROY 1868 - Felix of Charles Kane and Janice McElderry. 24 March 1879 - Felix died aged eleven. Witness was Charles Kane 15 March 1873 - Mary of Charles and Janice McElderry. 15 August 1874 - Mary died aged 17 months. Witness was Janice Kane. 13 February 1876 - Patrick Kane of Charles Kane and Janice McElderry. from researching the 1901 census returns for the civil district of Pomeroy we discovered a Charles Kane, a carpenter married to a Bridget Kane, formerly unknown and a son Patrick Kane, residing in a house in the town of Pomeroy. The results of this finding are included on Appendix 1. This therefore means that when Janice McElderry died 4 May 1888 aged 40 years, Charles remarried a Bridget; however there were no children to this marriage. Transcribed by Steven GrantClose
