IRISH EMIGRANTS'
LETTERS FROM CANADA
1839 -1870
FOREWORD
The writers were Joseph (born 1793,
died after 1870) and Nathaniel (b. about
1796, d. 1881), brothers of my grandfather
William Carrothers (b. 1798, d. 1883).
They were born at Farnagh [Farnaght?], near Lisbellaw,
[Barony of Tirkennedy, Parish of Derryvullan?],
County Fermanagh, Ireland, a townland
of about 26 Irish acres [42 acres, 1 rood, 10 perches?], to which
their grandfather Edward (b. 1723, d. about
1800) removed from the nearby townland of
Bracky [Barony of Tirkennedy, Parish of Derryvullan?]
in 1769. He secured a lease of it
from Lord Bellisle in 1770.
Edward's son William (b. 1755, d. 1836)
was the father of the writers. Nathaniel
went to Canada about 1835, and Joseph in
1847.
These letters home, mostly sent from
Westminster. near London, Ontario, are all
that are known to exist, and are given
without any omissions or alterations.
It is primarily to meet the wishes of
some friends and kinsfolk in Canada and in
Ireland that I have had copies made.
For assistance in the production of
this book I am much indebted to Miss
Audrey D. Browne, Mr. Robert Carruthers
Davidson, and Mr. Norman S. Crothers, who
helped me with the typing, checking,
duplicating and binding.
