Newcastle Dec [December?] 18. 1864
Dear Mother
This letter will be short as I have to write to [two?] more
long letters and and [sic] have already written two one to M [
Corderer?] and the other to a man at the works. I have not had a letter
now for five weeks until yesterday when I got two from Montreal one from
Aunt Lilly and the other from [Miriam?]. They were forwarded from
Newburgh and I had to pay 26 cents for them I shall enclose the letter
from Aunt Lilly but want you to return it the next time you write I am
getting $2.50 cents a day and expect more shortly I am still boarding in
the hotel. On Monday I join Order of the Templars that is a temperance
society and when I become acquainted I hope to find a [------?] house it
is my intention to get to some large town about March or April more
likely Boston. I do not spend my nights to much advantage as I can
[-----?] [-----?] and that is why I will not stop long here. I think that
I might get a letter from some of the girls at Christmas if I do not I
shall be disappointed I cannot in this letter tell you any thing about
Philadelphia but will next week when I have not so much writing to do I
shall expect to get a letter next week from you I hope that you will not
feel disappointed at the shortness of this. Give my love to all my friends
and I hope that you will spend a Merry Christmas and a happy New year
