                      Augusta Geo [Georgia?]
                         13 Feby 1866
Wm. [William?] J. C. Allen Esq
        My Dear Sir
Early last month I wrote you of the
death of our friend James Brown. after a few days
illness by this sad bereavement I lost one of my warmest
friends and the community one of the very best citizens.
a few days prior to his death we had a conversation
regarding the sale of the Geo [Georgia?] Rail Road
Stock. he expressed himself very desirous that it
should be disposed of. but I saw the prospect was fair
that it would advance in value. at that time it was
worth about Sixty eight. and a sale made a few days since
brought Seventy two. in a few days I shall put it on
the market and as soon as sold will remit proceeds
to J & [S?] Stewart New York with instructions to
place same to the credit of the Ulster Bank on your
account. this course I think prudent to peruse. as you
will see from the papers I send you that a resolution
has been introduced into the Legislature for the
relief of the Stockholders and many think its passage
doubtful. as the Bills of the Banks are principally
held by the planters who will do all they possibly can
to defeat it. under these circumstances I think it
prudent that your funds should be taken out of this
country. be pleased to show this letter to our cousins.
[Mrs?] Campbell and Bones are in good health. and all
your friends here. Yours Very Truly
