                  Portadown April 20th 1848
Dear Joseph
         I now at length take a moment
to write a line or two to you in reply to your
last which came to hand in due time I had
[-------?] to write by every mail since but some
thing ocurred to prevent me till it was too late
If this reaches you there is a note enclosed from
John MaCowan which will set you right respecting
Cairn's Bill and the œ60:15:0 which I have paid
him for you I gave it without reference to
any thing connected with the Bill or [Ledwiches?]
account whatever I did so because I was displeased
by Mr M making a Demand which I
thought he should not have done and if
I had funds at the time I would have
paid him out, and I am quite sure
you will think it strange when I tell
you that he has asked me for the
ballance two three times since and has
plainly stated that he did not make the
arrangement with you that you speak
of
