Petersburg Va. [Virginia?] August 16th I have nothing from you
dearest since the 21st July, the evening you were
expecting Mag. & her little man, I fully expected to
have heard this evening by the Persia which left
L'Pool [Liverpool?] in the 4th but if you wrote before the 1st it
will doubtless be on the Anglo Saxon via L'Derry [Londonderry?]
& her mails will be here in a couple of days, I
had rather loose [lose?] 5$ than that letter I have waited
very patiently for it, I saw McNiece just now
reading a long espistle [epistle?], but did not interupt [interrupt?] him
so many of your friends enquiring & sending their love
I cannot enumerate them so you must just take
it in the lump, all here are well, we had two
awful wet days this week & so cold the thermometer
fell 20o, it is recovering gradually & is now very pleacing [pleasing?]
business is very dull more so than I ever saw it at
this season we will have a very late fall trade
if we have any [?] worth speaking about.
I was offered a few days since an office, 1,000$
a year and 1/10 of the profits of the steam mill
they expect to sell about 250,000$ worth a year
to buy wheat for them. I declined for several reasons
the most potent its being in the same hands to
manage & sell as before I fear the profits being
on the wrong side, not knowing the business,
& being engaged for the balance of the year there
is nothing of interest to mention we get along
quietly so little doing. I expected to have been
writing you a long letter today but now you will
not have it for a week if then, hope I will
get a full budget in a day or two of agreeable
news, remember me to all friends kiss son
for me I will be considerably in your debt
if you stay long, are you getting homesick?
believe me live with sincere affection
your very affectionate Husband
