My dear Charlotte and Lucy,
I know you are interested in what conditions
are as to Robert Campbell, Estate, I have been located in St. Louis since December 1, last in regard to this Estate.
(1)I think the Probate Court, has been convinced that this is a trust
estate of Robert Campbell and wife, placed this entire estate in a Deed of
Trust, February 14, 1877, this was never changed at the date of Robert Campbell,
October 15, 1879, this deed of trust was Recorded October 31, 1879. His
wife Virginia J. Campbell, died with a broken heart January 31, 1882 at this
date the Probate Court, should taken charge of this large estate, and appointed Administrators, to manage and see that the property was taken care of.
Nothing has been done for the past fifty years and most of these buildings
have been built 75 to a 100 years, at that date the valuable location
was near the Missisippi River, water was the means of transportation
and if you could see building after building four and five stories
high along the work[?] all empty and gone to destruction many of those
were Robert Campbells, then again he has one and1/4 acres located at
the sixty hundred block here in St. Louis, at normal times is worth
over a million dollars, unlimited farm land in many states, but the
big item of all at present date they are two million five hundred
thousand dollars in Government Bonds, (cash), but this will stay
intact until the death of Hazlett K. Campbell, he is the last one
living mentioned in this Deed of Trust, he was 76 years of age, Feb
last
(2)The Attorney for the Estate will ask the Probate Court, to
appoint those Administrators, to administrate this Robert
Campbell, Estate, this he expects to do this week, this being done
Page 74
The will Hugh Campbell made is nul and
Will not be considered at the final settlement.
(3)The Atty informs me at the death of Hazlett, the
Descendants of the children of our Grandfather
Andrew Campbell. I understand.
Page 76
There were ten children, eight girls and two boys, like in your family
your mother’s share would be one tenth, thus tenth would be divide
equally to her children for example my mothers one tenth share
would be equally divided between my sister Mary and I. I
wonder if you could locate our uncle Robt. B. Campbell’s death,
if so date and where buried, Bessie O’Neill, said he died in
Glasgo[w], Scotland, and his family were all dead died of lung trouble
it seems they worked in the Gas works, if these Administers
are appointed I will let you know you can let all the cousins
see this and especially Albert, you have my permission to send
a copy to Dr Dunn, and Charlotte Patterson, and with love to all
your sisters and brother Hugh, I am shure [sure] you will spread these[?]
as I do not have time to write each. I am permanently located
in St. Louis. Mary, took a fall of the porch two weeks ago has
a sprained arm but is getting better.
With kindest personal regards to one and all and for
may be shure [sure] I will see that every one of the cousins claims
are filed.
Very truly yours Chas. H. Clarke.
