My Dear Albert

I wonder if Charles Clarke sent
you a newspaper cutting about a guardian
being appointed for Hazlett Campbell?
The Judge before whom the application came
said he "understood there would probably
be litigation" over the property. “A
group of relatives" who expected. To
inherit made the motion to have
this done. The name given as petitioners
being a New York lawyer called Oty.
McClelland, a grandson of a Mrs Bettie
Oty Anderson who was a cousin of the
Campbells. I think the children of their
Father’s brother should also have a claim?
Hugh Campbell provided in his will that
the heirs of Mrs Anderson should get
the furniture of the St Louis house
at Hazlett’s death. He may live
for years yet. But do you not think
we should let the guardians or trustees
know that.

We think we have a claim?
You probably know the American law.
These cousins may be, and probably are,
Hazletts’ mother’s connections. But in one
of the old St Louis letters I found in
the Aughalane box Aunt Mary speaks
of going to see my “husband’s nephew
and his wife". This can only have
been a “half” nephew.

It would be a great pity to let the
money go out of the family if we could
have a share. I’d like to know what
you think of it? Mary De Vore sent
this cutting to Ellen[?] but I could
let you see it if you haven’t got
one.

With love from both to both

Yours ever affectly

Charlotte J. MacCulloch
