COLLISION ON THE CLYDE
STEAMER RUN DOWN
On Friday afternoon, shortly after 4.0'clock, a
collision took place between the steamers Europa and
Heaton Hall, of Messrs. Stephen & Son's slip,
Kelvinhaugh, by which the Heaton Hall was cut down to
the water's edge, and was run ashore to keep her from
sinking. The Europa was on the passage up the river
from New York, and the Heaton Hall was on passage down
the river for the Mediterranean. The Europa's bow struck
her on the port side before the bridge, the Heaton Hall,
at the time of the collision, having been in the act of
crossing more to the starboard side. On being struck
the Heaton Hall swung round, and struck the Europa near
the stern, bending her davits and damaging her boats
and rails. The fireman of the Heaton Hall jumped
overboard in alarm, but being an excellent swimmer he
safely reached shore.
