RETURN RELATIVE TO THE ARCHDEACONRY OF ARMAGH. 

COPY of the Instrument appointing the present Archdeacon of Armagh. 

Upon search, it appeareth that the enrolment of a Grant remains of record amongst the Rolls in the Rolls Office of Her Majesty's High Court of Chancery in Ireland, of which the following is a Copy:— VICTORIA, by the grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Queen, Defender of the Faith. 
TO the Most Reverend Father in God, John George, by Divine Providence Lord Archbishop of Armagh, or to any other person or persons having authority or power in this behalf, Greeting: Whereas the Archdeaconry of Armagh, in the Diocese of Armagh, now void and in Our disposal, by the promotion of Doctor Edward Stopford, late Archdeacon thereof, to the Bishoprick of Meath: Our beloved in Christ, the Reverend John Whitley Stokes, Master of Arts, of Our special grace, certain knowledge and mere motion, by and with the advice and consent of Our right trusty and right well-beloved Cousin and Councillor, Thomas Philip Earl de Grey, Our Lieutenant-General and General Governor of that part of Our said United Kingdom called Ireland, We present unto the said Archdeaconry; To have and to hold the said Archdea¬ conry to him the said J ohn Whitley Stokes, together with the Lands, Tenements, Tithes, Rents, Rent-charges, Duties, Profits, Jurisdictions, Emoluments and Advantages what¬ soever, as well spiritual as temporal, thereunto belonging, in as full, ample and beneficial manner, to all intents and purposes whatsoever, as the said Edward Stopford, or any other person or persons formerly held and enjoyed, or of right ought to have held and enjoyed the same; demanding and requiring you, the said Archbishop of Armagh, or any other person or persons in this behalf having authority or power, that on sight of these Our Letters Patent, you or he do forthwith admit and invest, or cause to be admitted and invested canonically him the said John Whitley Stokes to and in the Archdeaconry of Armagh aforesaid ; commanding the Chapter of the Cathedral Church of Armagh, or any one or more of them, or any other person or persons in this behalf having authority or power, that on sight of these Our Letters Patent they or he do assign to the said John Whitley Stokes a Stall in the Choir, and a place and voice in the said Cathedral Church of Armagh, on account of his dignity aforesaid, according to custom and law: and that they and he do execute all and singular other matters and things as are according to law and custom in this behalf: Provided always, and firmly enjoining, We command that the said John Whitley Stokes shall enrol or cause to be enrolled these Our Letters Patent in the Rolls of Our High Court of Chancery in Ireland aforesaid, within six months next after the date of these Presents : In witness whereof, We have caused these Our Letters to be made Patent: Witness Our aforesaid Lieutenant-General and General Governor of Ireland at Dublin, the Tenth day of December One thousand eight hundred and Forty-two. 
Enrolled the Sixteenth day of December One thousand eight hundred and Forty-two.
